It was a colossal mistake when the start of the New Year was changed from March 25th to January 1st.

You know, I was thinking this too. The harmony with nature would seem to reasonably dictate the renewal starts in the spring season. I am not entirely sure how this change came about but wonder (at least for Christianity), it didn’t occur during the process of replacing pagan celebrations with Christian holidays. Do you know how/when it came about? I am glad you brought this up!

But when I was in college and deep into 18th century British Literature, we learned that in England and the American colonies, the change was in the 1750's, and here's one explanation for that: https://www.mass.gov/news/happy-new-year
