I try to keep track of these sorts of things and add new resources as I come across them- It helps me to see them all in one place and I hope others too. Thanks so much for commenting! 🥰
Holy shoot, I'm amazed I even won a shout-out for the event I help with and my writing, thanks Tracy. I'm honestly moved at the support, you're much too kind!
I am all about fiction! I love it and find so much within it that rings truer than factual writing. Thanks so much for your support, Mika, it means much to me. 🥰😊😊🙏🏼
Tracy thank you for the shout out! You are prepping everyone for the spooky season! 👻
I was reading an article on the book publishing and categorizing genres. I think the word thriller attracts a lot of readers to books. I can’t remember exactly. But often times Books are categorized according to the most popular genre. Adding weight to advertising efforts!
Thank you for the info. I often feel confused by genre distinctions and have found new genre designations I have never heard of before! I don’t write scream and slash horror and don’t even like watching or reading them - I will keep this thriller designation in mind and look more into genre descriptions too! 🥰🥰
I wish I had kept the article! It was here on Substack and I thought I would remember it but now I don’t. But definitely it’s worth a research into categorizing genres for a book. I know more sale with different genre tag than others. So hence the distinctions.
I do that sometimes with articles I wish to keep and study further only to find I can’t find! 🤣 No worries, Charlotte-I bet I can find more info online. I did read something fairly recently that if you submit to trad publisher, they will expect you to tell them your genre as well as what about your book will appeal to an audience to ensure it is sale-able. I have a 80% finished novel that I have been having trouble figuring out its genre lol… is it horror, scifi, maybe thriller!? Fun stuff!! 🤣🥰 So nice chatting with you! 🫶🏼🙏🏼✨✨
Yes nice chatting with you too Tracy! My last few weeks have been extremely busy and I have not been on Notes as often as I would like to be. There is so much research to do when publishing a book. Good luck! 💖 And I hope that morsel of information helps you determine your genre. Have a beautiful magical day! ✨✨✨
“By the cracking …” quote spurred a memory. In college I wrote a paper trying to determine if Shakespeare believed in witchcraft or if it was just a convention he used. It was indeed a fall course. I don’t have that paper, and at 58 I recall more of the late night typing the thing than the actual content.
The Bard’s time was interesting, just on the cusp of Francis Bacon, prior to the Enlightenment. North American Continent was being slowly explored, and the thought of leaving Europe not quite prevalent.
How interesting our selective memories are. It sounds like you might have been taking an English Lit course? I always enjoyed Lit and creative writing classes. I have read and enjoyed Shakespeare but was surprised when I first came across a few decades ago the idea that Shakespeare as a singular writer was incorrect. I found this a bit disturbing and chose not to look into it further, now my curiosity is outweighing my desire to ignore something I don’t like the sound of 🤣🤣 what is your thinking or knowledge of this matter might I ask? I subscribed to you as I like the tone and careful reporting you use-looking forward to reading more!
Re that paper I wrote, it was for an undergrad course on writing where we had to do a research paper on any topic of our choice. I recall reading about James 6th of Scotland collecting all this research on witchcraft and somehow my mind drifted to Shakespeare and all the conventions he used with witches, specters, etc. It just occurred to me now that you could make the case that Hamlet is a ghost story with a curse.🤪
So are you asking what I think of the theory that Shakespeare is a different author or an amalgamation of other authors? I’ve considered that, listened to a few of the debates on YouTube. In fact many considered that Francis Bacon was Shakespeare, as well as Elizabeth’s secrete illegitimate son! But that is really substituting on mega genius with another, so I don’t know. Bacon was busy enough in science so I don’t know if he had the time to write let alone stage plays. It’s not enough to just come up with a script. But could Shakespeare be a pen name? It’s possible. When you think about the whole Anglican Church vs the papists vs Protestant thing at the time, I would not be surprised if Shakespeare were a pen name.
I did a podcast/live stream last summer that featured John Dee and Francis Bacon “007 In Atlantis”. I touched upon some of the figures in the Elizabethan court at the time, and how Bacon’s scientific method sparked a real revolution in thinking. You might enjoy that.
Thank you Tracy for mentioning the Substack Book Group Directory!

I am partial to it also- feels mystical, nostalgic and brand new all at once- without all the commercial influences to spend, spend, spend! 🥰

I love it! Will definitely check this out!
Like I said, I’m not expert, I kind of go down rabbit holes, but like Mark Twain I’m weary of experts and do stuff myself. Hope you enjoy.
Nothing better than rabbit holes 🥰
